The Problem Nobody Was Talking About
When generative AI like ChatGPT burst onto the scene, educational institutions panicked. In response, a wave of “AI Detectors” rushed to market. Teachers and professors began running every student essay through these opaque algorithms, taking the results as undeniable proof of cheating.
But there was a massive flaw.
These detectors didn’t actually read the text. They looked for mathematical patterns—specifically “perplexity” (vocabulary complexity) and “burstiness” (sentence length variation). This created a devastating wave of false positives.
We noticed a troubling trend: Non-native English speakers (ESL students) and neurodivergent writers were being flagged at disproportionately high rates. Because they often write with more standardized, formal vocabulary and consistent sentence structures to avoid grammatical errors, detectors incorrectly classified their hard work as “robot-generated.”
Our Mission
